WK Transplant Football Frankfurt 2026 with TeamNL ⚽🇱🇺🧡⚽

On Saturday, September 12, we departed by train to Frankfurt. Upon arrival, we checked into our hotel. The nice thing about this hotel was that many countries were staying here, such as Chile, England, Colombia, Italy, etc. The next morning we went to the large sports complex of the DFB (German Football Association) to enjoy our first training session as a team. During the training, I got injured. A wrong twist of the hip on the indoor artificial turf proved fatal for me, and suddenly my wife and I found ourselves in the hospital in Frankfurt.

X-rays indicated that there was no fracture or anything of the sort, but that I had sustained a huge injury in and around my hip. Considering the limited number of players available to us as the Dutch team, this injury was not really welcome. For me, one thing was clear: I would and had to play, no matter what. I had done everything to be fit. The extensive training and my adjusted lifestyle had paid off, and I couldn't let this chance be ruined because of that. I had to and I would play, no matter what! Although the doctor also advised taking rest, I tried to alleviate the pain the next day with paracetamol, which worked partially.

Five minutes short, I played all the matches of this tournament. We started against the reigning world champion Chile and lost 7-0. The second match was against England, also one of the top countries from two years ago. At halftime, the score was 5-0 for England, and during the break, we agreed on a different play style. This was successful, and the second half ended in 0-0, which for us was a win. We maintained this upward trend, and although we lost to Romania and Colombia, we played well, with the results being 3-1 and 2-0 despite the many chances we had. As a result, we finished last in the group and had to play against Ireland and Northern Ireland for the 13th-14th or 15th place. The first opponent was Northern Ireland, and we narrowly lost 3-2 against the odds. Now, all that remained for us was the match for the 14th-15th place against Ireland. Playing well, we won this match 5-0, which was the reward for the improvement in our game. We were finally rewarded for our effort, struggle, perseverance, and fighting together for a good result.

It's great that this worked out, despite the fact that we as a team had a maximum of 1 substitute player available per match. Most teams had 8 substitutes, which was a huge advantage for them given the substitution policy, stepping in for injured players, etc. We didn't have that luxury.
