Our project’s name, WakahChan, 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝗺𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆, and it holds a powerful meaning.

Wakah Chan translates to “Raised Up Sky” or “World Tree”, symbolizing the Cosmic Tree that connects the underworld, earth, and the heavens. 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 

For the Maya, the WakahChan (often represented by the ceiba tree) stood at the center of the universe. 𝗜𝘁´𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘀, 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝗺𝗼𝘀.

By naming our village WakahChan, we honor this indigenous wisdom and commit to 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘆.
