An important step in cardiology: international experts have agreed on a new universal definition of myocardial infarction. And that is more than just semantics. How you define a heart attack determines what you look for, what you investigate, and what you recognize. And ultimately, who you treat.

The classic view of a heart attack was largely focused on an occluded coronary artery due to atherosclerosis and thrombosis. However, a heart attack can also occur due to mechanisms such as coronary spasm, SCAD, or an embolism, which are relatively important in women.

There will also be more attention to sex-specific troponin thresholds. This is important because women generally have lower troponin levels and may therefore be missed with a single uniform cutoff value.

That touches on something I have been working hard on for years:

The woman is not the deviation from the norm. Perhaps we should sometimes change the norm.

Because what you don't know, you can't recognize. ❤️
